With the hustle and bustle of everyday events, keeping a journal has numerous health benefits and is an effective way to clear your mind, boost creativity, improve memory, and generally keep track of how well you are doing.
No magical skills are required to write a personal journal, it is just about expressing yourself with a pen on paper in your comfort zone. Though you may sometimes experience a stale feeling that keeps you from writing, a little dedication will revive your desire and keep you going. For better journal writing, use these tips as a guide.

Choose a Place to Write
Before you write, make sure you pick a quiet part of the house where you are most comfortable. It doesn’t have to be your bedroom since you can easily get too comfortable there and lose focus. You don’t want any distractions, so perhaps use your office or study room. Make it a habit to write every day in that place you have chosen, it will help you feel more connected to your journal and serve as an automatic reminder anytime you walk in.
Get a Quality Journal
There are two ways you can go about this:
Software: the app world is flooded with different journal applications to choose from. Get one and type in your daily inputs. Don’t forget to sync your journal to the cloud, you don’t want to lose your precious records if anything happens to your device.
Hardware: Buy a high-quality paper journal, let it not be too big for your bag in case you need to carry it around. Some say it is outdated but I am one of those people who will never stop using the traditional method of pen and paper for my journal. We use electronic devices all the time, journal writing should take us away from the screen.
(My favourite journals, and I know this is pretentious, are Moleskines. I can’t help it! There’s just something about them.)
Follow a Schedule
Pick a specific time of the day to write in your journal, preferably when the day is over; right before you go to bed.
Time yourself with an alarm clock to keep you focused throughout your writing, anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes is okay. Follow your schedule as best you can.
This is not an exam, it is your private journal so write without bothering how it will look if someone saw it. You can write about anything; your love life, your day at the office, your worries, your feelings…anything. Be honest about the things you write, you will need to use them later and if you sugarcoated any detail, you’ll be misguided. So be real and write it as it is.
Ensure that you date your entries so that when you’re going through it, you’ll know the point in your life you were having certain experiences and thoughts. It is not necessary to title your daily inputs but if you do, it will be easier to browse your journal.
